RYTHM Foundation has embarked on a transformative initiative with the Kensiu indigenous Orang Asli community in northern Malaysia as part of its Community Adoption Programme (CAP).
The Kensiu, a sub-group of the Negrito and one of Malaysia’s oldest Orang Asli communities, have traditionally lived in close-knit groups deeply connected to their natural environment.
Building on our successful CAP initiatives in Pahang and Sabah, this new three-year project in Kampung Lubuk Legong in Baling, Kedah, aims to enhance education and develop sustainable ecotourism opportunities for the Kensiu people. With a population of 312 residents from 87 families, the project seeks to secure a brighter future for the next generation.
Revitalising Education for Kensiu Children
The education gap between Orang Asli students and their peers remains wide, and Kensiu children are no exception. Only a tiny percentage have completed their schooling for decades.
To address this, we have partnered with the School of Distance Education of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to implement an educational programme for approximately 80 children in the village.
The programme blends interactive activities with core learning to make education more engaging and relevant for the children. It will also introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education over time to help reduce dropout rates and boost student confidence.
To further support the young learners, pre- and post-evaluation tests will track their academic performance and motor skills development.
Kensiu Youth and the Future of Eco-Tourism
Alongside education, the adoption will equip Kensiu youth with ecotourism skills to foster sustainable livelihoods while preserving their cultural heritage and environment.
The programme will include training in hospitality, tour guiding, and conservation, providing economic opportunities and promoting the community’s rich biodiversity and traditions.
One long-term goal is to create Taman Warisan Kensiu, a heritage park that will serve as a cultural and economic hub. This aspect will promote communal ownership, allowing the Kensiu people to preserve their environment and traditions while benefiting economically.
A Brighter Future for the Kensiu
By concentrating on education, cultural preservation, and sustainable economic opportunities, the initiative seeks to protect the Kensiu community’s unique heritage while empowering them to flourish in the modern world. This approach transforms the Kensiu story into one of resilience, adaptation, and hope – a future where heritage and progress advance together.
The Head of RYTHM Foundation, Santhi Periasamy, states: “We are committed to aiding the Kensiu people in safeguarding their distinct cultural heritage while fostering opportunities for advancement. We aim to empower the community to flourish and sustain their rich traditions amidst a rapidly evolving landscape.”
