PETALING JAYA, August 12, 2024 – Taarana School, a centre for children with cognitive and sensory challenges, has launched ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana,’ a programme that reinforces the school’s commitment to sustainability and aims to educate its students about conservation and recycling.
This initiative, which focuses on ecological education, skill development, social inclusion, and sustainable practices, also crucially equips Taarana’s neurodivergent students with a foundation for future jobs in the field. Taarana was established in 2011 by RYTHM Foundation, the social impact initiative of the global conglomerate QI Group.
Since May, the programme has integrated several sustainable practices into the school’s daily routines, engaging students, staff, and parents in reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly habits. The initiative has fostered a collaborative effort within the school, encouraging everyone to adopt greener habits and contribute to a more sustainable environment.
The key components of ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana’ include recycling collection stations, sorting activities, and creative art projects produced from waste materials. Looking ahead, the project aims to empower students by fostering independence, enhancing inclusivity, and providing practical preparation for jobs in environmentally-focused industries.
Dr Sunitha Sivakumaran, the Principal of Taarana, expressed enthusiasm for the programme, stating, “At Taarana, we believe in nurturing not only the intellectual and emotional development of our students but also their sense of responsibility towards the world around them.
“This project is a testament to our commitment to creating a sustainable future for our students and community. Although it is primarily targeted at our older pre-vocational students, this initiative also reflects our efforts to instil environmental awareness and responsibility in our younger students, fostering a culture of sustainability from an early age.”
In addition to its focus on sustainability, the programme is designed to serve as a model of inclusivity, showcasing how tailored educational approaches can lead to meaningful outcomes for students with diverse needs.
“Through ‘Zero Waste @ Taarana,’ we are advancing environmental sustainability while championing inclusivity and recognising the invaluable contributions of our special needs community,” said Datin Sri Umayal Eswaran, the Chairperson of RYTHM Foundation, during the launch event.
“This initiative not only empowers Taarana’s students but also fosters a society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can integrate without judgment or preconceived notions. It embodies our commitment to a more inclusive and sustainable future,” Datin Sri Umayal added.
Taarana specialises in providing quality education and resources for children with special education needs. Its overarching goal is to unlock each child’s potential through structured academic and therapy programmes, enabling them to become active and contributing members of their communities.
The school’s teachers and therapists collaborate closely with parents to develop personalised education and therapy plans that reflect each child’s abilities. Beyond academic achievement, the school is cherished as a secure, inclusive, and nurturing environment for both children and their families.
