PETALING JAYA, 26 January 2026 — Taarana, an award-winning education centre for children with special education needs, commemorates World Environmental Education Day 2026 through the launch of a pioneering workbook, “The Magic of Recycling”, and curated sustainability activities designed to raise environmental awareness and instil sustainable values among its students.
This year’s celebration, highlighting the critical role of education in addressing environmental challenges, aims to encourage young neurodivergent students to become environmentally conscious and responsible, to translate environmental concepts into everyday action.
Dr Sunitha Sivakumaran, Principal of Taarana, emphasised, “Our students learn best by doing. Initiatives like this give them the space to experience sustainability in a real, meaningful way, and to see that their actions, however small, matter.”
These initiatives reflect Taarana’s commitment to holistic education, integrating environmental stewardship into learning experiences that promote responsibility, teamwork, and real-world impact.
Reshaping the Environment Through “The Magic of Recycling” Book
In conjunction with this global observance, Taarana celebrates the grand launch of their workbook titled “The Magic of Recycling”, authored by Taarana’s dedicated teacher, Joanne Mathilda John, following its initial soft launch during last year’s Annual Day.
Building on the Taarana’s ZeroWaste Project launched in August 2024, this interactive workbook combines colourful visuals, storytelling, and hands-on activities to make complex environmental concepts simple, engaging, and accessible to neurodivergent youth. The initiative began as a classroom-led effort and has evolved into a community-wide advocacy effort, encouraging sustainable habits among students, families, and local partners.
The publication of this workbook symbolises Taarana’s vision to create specialised, effective educational tools that equip neurodivergent learners with both essential life skills and a sense of purpose. This also further demonstrates how Taarana develops effective learning solutions from within, proving that with the right approach, neurodivergent students can meaningfully engage with vital issues like sustainability.
Furthermore, these approaches align with Malaysia’s National Policy for Persons with Disabilities and UNESCO’s Education for All Framework, helping to create more inclusive, equitable learning pathways for neurodivergent pupils. Programmes such as this not only enrich the students’ experience but also create a positive impact on the community. I hope these initiatives will continue to be organised and expanded in the future,” said Mr. Nazri Mohamad, Assistant District Education Officer of the Special Education Unit (Learning Sector) at the Petaling Utama District Education Office, during the launch of Taarana’s World Environmental Education Day celebration earlier today.
Integrating Sustainability with Experiential Learning
In collaboration with the environmental Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Generasi Peduli Sampah (GPS), Taarana also launched a series of sustainability initiatives specifically adapted for its neurodivergent students.
Activities ranging from e-waste collection, book and clothing donations, tree planting, to the institute clean-ups are carefully curated based on real-life engagement to ensure these students can participate regardless of their needs.
By integrating the spirit of gotong-royong (communal work) into the activities as a whole, the program also fosters a sense of cooperation, shared responsibility, and community participation. These structured and repeated activities encourage neurodivergent students to transform these lessons into lasting, sustainable habits that they can confidently apply in their daily lives.
Beyond its environmental impact, the collaboration serves as a powerful bridge between Taarana and members of society by highlighting that sustainability is an inclusive journey.
Building Awareness, Responsibility, and Community Spirit
By transforming abstract environmental frameworks into tangible, hands-on participation through this year’s World Environmental Education Day, Taarana ensures that their students develop a deep-rooted understanding of environmental issues around them while cultivating their confidence, curiosity, and social responsibility.
This reflects the Taarana’s steadfast commitment to holistic learning that balances knowledge with empathy, creativity, and environmental consciousness, as well as preparing its students to thrive as independent and socially responsible members of society.
“Our celebration of World Environmental Education Day showcases our core methodology: moving beyond traditional learning to provide inclusive, experiential education,” said Dr Sunitha Sivakumaran. “It exemplifies how Taarana integrates sustainability with hands-on learning, empowering neurodivergent children and establishing a replicable model for holistic education in Malaysia,” she further emphasised.
The 2026 celebration also shines a spotlight on the transformative power of collaboration and inclusion in promoting accessible, sustainable practices for the neurodivergent. The unity between students, teachers and dedicated partners from RYTHM Foundation and QI Group creates a supportive ecosystem that fosters inclusion and shared purpose, proving that accessible and sustainable practices are most effective when the entire community works together to ensure no one is left behind.
