Annual celebration highlights inclusion, resilience and the role of educators and caregivers in supporting neurodivergent children.
PETALING JAYA, 16 MAY 2026 – Taarana, an award-winning education centre for children with special education needs, took on a double significance as its highly anticipated annual sports day coincides with the Teachers’ Day celebration. Themed “Guardians of the Nation,” the double celebration created a powerful tribute to the teachers who protect and strengthen the students of Taarana through education and inclusion.
“Today is more than just an annual celebration of fun and games. As we celebrate Teachers’ Day today, we are also recognising the dedication of our teachers at Taarana as the first line of defence in nurturing these young guardians, working hard to support our students every step of the way,” said Dr Sunitha Sivakumaran, Principal of Taarana.
The theme reflected a core belief that every individual, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, possesses essential value and plays a vital role in the community.
Amidst cheers, vibrant colours and an evident sense of community, today’s celebration transformed Dewan Serbaguna Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) into an arena of empowerment in which students, parents and teachers stood side by side as contributors to a stronger, more inclusive and resilient society.
Guardians in Action
The day commenced with a high-energy warm-up and aerobic session led by Taarana’s teachers setting a vibrant tone before everyone transitioned into a series of games specially tailored to showcase the diverse talents of the students and families.
Embodying the theme, the session was also underscored by a heartwarming parents-and-children game segment that highlighted caregivers’ vital role in the community.
The excitement of the annual sports day reached its peak during the awards presentation ceremony, where every participant was recognised for their contribution. This annual dedication to celebrating neurodivergent students reaffirms Taarana’s commitment to providing an environment in which its students are recognised as integral members of society.

This year’s event marked one of Taarana’s largest sports days to date, with over 30 students, 77 parents and caregivers, 19 staff and 11 volunteers in attendance. Now entering its 14th year, this annual celebration continues to grow as a key platform for an inclusive community engagement in Petaling Jaya.
Empowering Inclusion and Achievement
True empowerment at Taarana goes beyond the physical activities on the field. Providing an environment where all abilities are celebrated, Taarana fosters a sense of agency and self-worth.
As Vidya Anandan, Head of RYTHM Foundation, noted, “Inclusion is not a one-day effort. It is a continuous commitment to building systems that recognise and support every individual’s potential. Through initiatives like Taarana’s annual day, we are creating platforms where every child is encouraged to participate, express themselves, and shine in their own unique way, while shaping a more inclusive and compassionate society.”
For Taarana student Rayden Lai’s family, supporting him at the sports days has become an annual tradition they would not miss. “Moments like this mean so much to our family. Seeing our children participate with confidence and joy reinforces how important inclusive spaces like Taarana are, not just for them, but for families like ours,” said Rayden’s mother, Carmen Lai.
The double celebration of the annual sports day and the National Teachers’ Day served as a powerful testament to guardianship defined by empathy, patience and mutual respect.
As the sports day concluded, it became clear that whether through a teacher’s patience or a student’s resilience, every person present is a vital Guardian of the Nation’s future.
Inclusion is not just a goal but a lived experience, and every shared cheer and milestone throughout the day proved just that.
The “Guardians of the Nation” theme remained a powerful reminder that a true community’s strength lies in protecting the dignity of its members, ensuring no one is left behind on the journey toward a more compassionate and inclusive future.
