“There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, so when we needed them, they could fight the battles that we never could…” – Nick Fury, The Avengers
Singapore, 1 June 2012 – Instead of spending time with just their families, more than 50 employees spent their Friday night with children from Chen Su Lan Methodist Children Home. The home provides residential care, protection and shelter to children from 5 to 16 years old. They also run programmes and counselling to non-resident youths and families to foster strong and positive family ties, confidence and self-esteem. In the spirit of care and compassion for others, QI through our “We Care” programme planned an activity to engage the children outside of the home. The organising committee arranged for the children and their caregivers to be picked up from the home and brought to Plaza Singapura where they have booked a movie theatre for the evening. Staff members were paired with a child and hosted the children to a movie screening of the blockbuster movie The Avengers. It was very hard for the children to conceal their excitement as the superheroes battle the villains in non-stop action. Even the staff was visibly enjoying the movies with the children’s company. The night was still early after the movies. The group of 122 adults and children walked and talked as they walk past the shops in the mall to McDonalds for desserts. It was indeed a memorable evening for everyone. “We all hope that we can always have this kind of opportunity to go out again. Thank you volunteers! (On) behalf of CSL we would like to thank all our volunteers for bringing us for a movie and ice cream.”– Excerpt from a letter written by one of CSL’s children
