Bangkok, 28 October 2012 – Not far from the heart of Bangkok, QI Services Thailand started their Sunday morning with a passion to make a difference at the Zero (0) Baht shop – a shop that turns recyclable trash into groceries! This initiative, made possible through the RYTHM Foundation, falls under the Foundation’s pillar of the conservation of the environment.
The project started with employees collecting ‘recyclable trash’ in their households and in the office. The CSR committee had set up a small space in the office to collect recyclable waste.
At the Zero (0) Baht site, staff learnt how to separate recyclable waste (e.g. plastic, bottles, paper, aluminum cans etc.) and the resulting piles of recyclable rubbish were weighed and calculated into a monetary value. This was then exchanged for food and groceries from the Zero Baht Shop!
Consultant of Onnuch Saleng Recycle Group, Mr. Peeratorn Saniwongse, who had volunteered to take part in the event, welcomed QI Services Thailand by introducing them to the centre and explaining about the origins of trash and the many ways of recycling. Together as a team, everyone learnt how to correctly categorise and label all the trash with the guidance of the centre’s staff. The QI team worked together and finally was given the opportunity to choose various groceries for the office including cooking oil, fish sauce, soap, toothpaste, etc.
Mr. Peeratorn also invited the group to walk around the ‘Intergrated Farming’ vegetable plantation and later explained how the Zero (0) Baht shop is an absolute necessity to society, helping the surrounding villagers and communities to learn how to maintain a more sustainable environment as well as making Thailand a better place to live in.
Not only that, the Zero (0) Baht shop and their staff gave everybody at QI Services Thailand a chance to learn how to improve the world by making use of unwanted ‘rubbish’ and contribute to a cleaner community.
For RYTHM Foundation, recycling is the future and through efforts such as this, it will continue to make an effort to conserve the environment now, and in the long run.
