In the wake of a devastating earthquake in Nepal in 2015, a tragedy that claimed the lives of nearly 9,000 people and injured and displaced tens of thousands more, the Shree Jana Uddhar Secondary School in the heart of Kathmandu was among the schools that suffered the most damage.
Following the quake, the school encountered considerable difficulties and obstacles. Eight years after the tragedy, its physical infrastructure remains incomplete, unsurprisingly resulting in inadequate student space and deteriorating education quality.
RYTHM Foundation has launched a transformative project dedicated to improving the quality of education and opportunities for Shree Janauddhar’s students and the Sitapaila community where the school is located.
The “Engaging School Community for Quality Education” (ESCQE) initiative with the National Forum for Advocacy Nepal (NAFAN) primarily involves key stakeholders and the community elevating the school’s educational standards.
The NGO has been our long-standing partner in Nepal, collaborating on our Sustainable Community Development Programme to deliver educational initiatives supporting the indigenous Chepang people in the rugged landscapes of the Raksirang district.
Addressing Educational Challenges
“Shree Jana Uddhar has endured the earthquake’s aftermath for too long,” said the Head of RYTHM Foundation, Santhi Periasamy. “Our commitment to this cause is a pledge to ensure that the students receive the proper support and education they deserve.”
By the programme’s end in 2025, the school strives to achieve a 95% attendance rate and empower 95% of Grades 6 to 10 students with essential computer skills. Many of these 400 students are from low-income backgrounds or orphaned.
Compounding this issue is the government’s fragmented school food programme, which can only cater to students up to Grade 5. Older students left without meals has led to a rise in absenteeism.
Shree Jana Uddhar’s administration has made efforts to address the food shortage. However, it has been forced to buy sub-standard meals because of improper food preparation facilities.
“From an educational perspective, the challenges encompass the absence of parental engagement in their children’s education and the presence of untrained educators delivering the government’s curriculum.
“The restricted availability of qualified teachers has also led to underutilised computer resources for students,” Santhi added.
To tackle these hurdles, NAFAN thoroughly assessed the school’s current practices and circumstances, resulting in a strategic plan for education enhancement. The in-depth assessment included a close examination of the school’s infrastructure, teaching methods, resource allocation, and the specific needs of the students.
