QI employees and volunteers across Malaysia and the Philippines came together for two employee environmental initiatives that demonstrated how collective action can make a meaningful difference.
Employee Environmental Action at Pantai Morib
In May, 19 participants from Employee Community Impact (ECI) Malaysia took part in a beach clean-up at Pantai Morib, Banting. Working along the shoreline, they collected rubbish washed ashore and scattered across the beach, helping restore the area’s natural beauty while raising awareness about protecting coastal ecosystems.
One memorable moment captured the spirit of the initiative. As volunteers gathered waste, a father approached with his young son, who had noticed a piece of plastic on the beach. Without being prompted, the child picked it up and asked to place it in the volunteers’ rubbish bag- a simple act that showed environmental responsibility can begin at any age.
Philippines QI Employees Turn Trash into Cash
The momentum continued in June, when employees and volunteers in the Philippines organised the Trash to Cash initiative simultaneously at SM Megamall in Metro Manila and SM Olongapo Central in Zambales. Participants donated recyclable materials, including paper, cartons, plastic bottles, glass, and metal, demonstrating how these materials can be given a second life while supporting sustainability and community programmes.
A total of 33 participants collected 224 kilograms of recyclable materials, generating ₱448 for the Philippines ECI Fund. More importantly, the initiative promoted responsible waste management and encouraged employees to adopt everyday recycling and waste segregation practices.
Reflecting on the experience, participant Benjamin Mindaro Jr. said, “I was happy to take part in an activity that helps keep our environment clean. It was also meaningful to know that unused books from home could be put to good use instead of going to waste.” The initiative highlighted how simple, everyday actions can reduce waste, create value from discarded materials, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Together, these initiatives reflect QI’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. They demonstrate that when employees, volunteers, and partners come together with a shared purpose, even the smallest actions can create lasting impact for communities and the environment.
