Hong Kong (China), 10 August 2011 – QI staff were treated to an eye-opening experience at a baking workshop with a difference – the teachers are all intellectually disabled. At the Caritas La Vie Bakery, the order of the day is demonstrating how baking is used to raise the confidence levels of those with special needs. For participants, the result is a generous helping of insight, which also serves to inculcate compassion amongst them.
Teacher Crystal Lam shares a few baking techniques.
Chief Technology Officer Malcolm Chiu said that the workshop had changed his misconceptions about the intellectually disabled. “The fact that I, an able-body, was taught baking by the intellectually challenged, has reversed the roles denoted by society, where the able-bodied usually aid the disabled,” he said. “The workshop proves that no disability is a hindrance to achieving your dreams.”
Chief Technology Officer Malcolm Chiu was both humbled and inspired.
As one of the CSR activities for staff during their birthday month, the four-hour workshop was initiated by RYTHM Foundation and arranged by ACT Social Awareness Network of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service.
