It was a unique experience for 22 Global Lifestyle Lanka (GLL) staff who volunteered and helped organise a special women empowerment program for their female colleagues held at the Maharagama Training Centre in Sri Lanka.
The five-hour workshop saw a total of 50 female staff from GLL participating in the workshop to learn some basic art of self-defence. The volunteers assisted in organizing and coordinating the event and staff participation.
In the workshop, the participants were taught Kyokushin Karate lessons and self-defence moves that can be useful in defending themselves in dangerous situations. Kyokushin Karate is considered the first and most influential style of full-contact karate in the world.
The participants were also taught to use the objects they often carry with them, such as their handbags and keys to defend themselves.
It was also an eye-opener for the participants and volunteers to listen to the experience of other female colleagues as they learned how to overcome the stigma of surviving in a male-dominated world.
